mortal immortal

i tried to stare down a tree
today
it was dark
and slightly moist
the air was that is
the tree was tall
with sharp green spikes
instead of leaves
and smelt of make-believe christmas
i caught it frozen
in the headlights
and stared
and it stared back
and i was all
rounded edges and motion and noise
the grinding sounds of breathing
and a catch in the back of my throat
it was tall and straigt and sharp
coated with strings of light
and buried in a slope of shadow
and still.
so very still.
i felt as though
its stillness attacked me
pinned me in
drew me caught me and repelled me
in its lack of motion
and so i stared
with fidgeting feet
and the rage of impermability
against this spear of the earth
that struck and was unmoving.
was unmoved
i tried to stare down a tree
tonight
but my moment shrank away
in the facets of its impervious face
and i swung the wheel far to the right
and went on
shaking and cutting swaths of light
through the quiet night

i like the contrast between the frigid "calmness" of nature vs. her curious fidgety human self. haha a staredown. im imagining seeing a random person on the road standing like a statue trying to stare down a tree.

dare i comment that the voice is different? dont get me wrong, i like it too but i feel like it's a different perspective/style.

i understand.

and {being sam.}
i love it.
{of course}
and {being me, again}
i will be cliche-ey
and say:
incredible.

the tree.
quivered and shook.
shaking its spokey branches.
sending shivers. down
to the tiniest tendrils
curled. around moist
earth.
and blinking. twice.
in the after-glare
of retreating headlights.
sunk.
into the ground.

explanation:
personally i saw someone playing chicken with a tree and hurdling at breakneck speeds towards their death, then "swinging the wheel to the far right" at the last possible second.
how was it supposed to be? they PARKED in front of a tree?
